Uterine Fibroids

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. These benign tumors are composed of smooth muscle tissue and fibrous connective tissue and can vary in size, number, and location within the uterine wall. While many women with uterine fibroids may not experience any symptoms, others may develop symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and reproductive issues such as infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

At Manohari Super Speciality Hospital Urology & IVF Centre, led by Dr. Ramachandra. K and Dr. Atchutha Subiksha, our team of experienced gynecologists specializes in the diagnosis and management of uterine fibroids. We understand the impact that fibroids can have on a woman’s health and quality of life and are committed to providing compassionate care and effective treatment options to address their concerns.

Treatment for uterine fibroids may vary depending on factors such as the size and location of the fibroids, the severity of symptoms, and the patient’s reproductive goals. For women with mild or asymptomatic fibroids, watchful waiting with regular monitoring may be recommended to observe for changes in symptoms or fibroid growth over time.

For women experiencing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding or pelvic pain, treatment options may include medications to regulate menstrual bleeding, reduce pain, or shrink the size of the fibroids. Hormonal therapies such as birth control pills, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonists), or progestin-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs) may be used to help manage symptoms and reduce the size of fibroids.

In cases where conservative treatments are ineffective or if the fibroids are causing significant symptoms or fertility issues, surgical interventions such as myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids), hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus), or minimally invasive procedures such as uterine artery embolization (UAE) or focused ultrasound surgery (FUS) may be recommended to provide relief and improve quality of life.
